Road Wear 04:02
Road Wear (Michael Fix/Mark Cryle) It had a pristine factory finish When I got it from the store I kept it by my bed inside the case So I practised and we headed out Like so many gone before And we rode the bumps and bruises Took our little falls from grace Chorus 1: Road wear, road wear One scar here and another there Not broken down or beyond repair We’re alright, it’s just road wear There’s a photo taken long ago I’m holding my first guitar The Christmas kid, with 3 chords and a dream I was working on Moonshadow Chasing a distant star And I think about that boy back then Think of all the how and when An all the changes seen Chorus 2 Road wear, road wear One scar here and another there Not broken down or beyond repair It’s alright, it’s just - road wear Every scar tells a story Of imperfection by degree And when we look into the mirror We think we know just what we see But when we look a little further We discover so much more It’s the wisdom in the learning And the beauty in the flaw Chorus 3 Road wear, road wear One scar here and another there Not broken down or beyond repair It’s alright, it’s just road wear

about

Road Wear is internationally acclaimed Brisbane-based guitarist Michael Fix’s 21st album of predominantly instrumental acoustic guitar music.

The album's 11 tracks were written and recorded over a three-year period like no other, when life was in lockdown.

The project began with a song written at the start of the pandemic, the evocative "The Other Side" - a wistful song of cautious optimism for the future.

The tune won the Cygnet Folk Festival National Songwriting Competition (sponsored by APRA) in 2020.

“The recording studio, which is attached to my home, is my happy place – my comfort zone I was writing and recording a new piece each month, with a view to compiling them onto an album, and I wasn’t too concerned about having them all hang together stylistically...
but as the pandemic wore on, I kept going, resulting in more tracks than needed."

The ‘keystone’ track, ironically, is the only vocal track on the album.

“It began with a conversation with Brisbane songsmith Mark Cryle, describing a photo shoot where the scars and marks of age were revealed in all their glory - on my face as well as my guitar!"

"Mark came up with the lyric for the song that became ‘Road Wear’, describing the journey of ageing – and experience – for both musicians and their instruments."

"Road wear, road wear
One scar here and another there
Not broken, or beyond repair
We’re alright - it’s just road wear"
